Earthframe #1 got the whole idea of calling our pictures 'Earthframes' started. We were on the search for a word that could describe the idea behind these kind of photos. In a brain storming with our friend George Cattermole (owner of the San Gregorio General store, our favorite hangout for live music) he came up with this term. Since then we extended the term 'Earthframe' also to pictures that are less abstract and show urban life. We know where we found Earthframe #1 at Christmas Day (12/25/2002). Since then it has been covered with sand.

Dieses Bild hat in uns die Idee zu 'Earthframes' geweckt. Wir waren auf der Suche nach einem Begriff, der diese Art von Bildern charakterisieren sollte. In einer intensiven Diskussion mit unserem Freund George Cattermole (Besitzer des San Gregorio General Stores, unser Lieblingsplatz für Livemusik) kam er auf den Begriff 'Earthframes'. Seit dem nennen wir auch weniger abstrakte Bilder und urbane Motive 'Earthframes'. Wir wissen heute noch, wo wir 'Earthframe #1' an Weihnachten 2002 fanden. Allerdings ist diese Stelle seitdem mit Sand bedeckt.

Uwe Steinmüller describes the photographic work in this volume as follows: "Earthframes capture Nature's facets and urban landscapes in a certain moment of time and isolate them from their familiar context." The diversity of California's landscape is masterfully and yet carefully displayed in the Earthframes. They convey a new and somewhat unusual picture of California and its nature, which in many areas is still untouched. However, they also offer a look into the urban world of the Pacific coastline, away from the tourist attractions and the "noisy side of California". It may come as a surprise to some observers that these fragile pictures where taken with a digital camera, that they are the result of a "digital photo workflow". As such, this book is further proof of the possibilities and quality potentials digital photography can offer to artist photographers.

"Earthframes fangen Facetten der Natur und städtischer Landschaften in einem ganz bestimmten Augenblick ein und isolieren sie aus ihrem gewohnten Zusammenhang" beschreibt Uwe Steinmüller die fotografischen Arbeiten in diesem Band. Über Jahre hinweg ist dieser Zyklus von Bildern entstanden, der charakteristisch ist für den Stil von Bettina und Uwe Steinmüller. Die Earthframes setzen die Vielfalt der kalifornischen Landschaft sehr behutsam und gekonnt in Szene, vermitteln ein neues und eher ungewohntes Bild Kaliforniens und seiner noch vielfach unberührten Natur. Sie bieten aber auch Einblicke in die urbane Welt der pazifischen Küste, abseits der touristischen Ziele und des "lauten Kaliforniens". Manchen Betrachter mag es überraschen, dass diese zarten Bilder digital fotografiert wurden, dass sie Ergebnisse eines "digitalen Fotoworkflows" sind. Das Buch ist somit ein weiterer Beleg dafür, welche Möglichkeiten und Qualitätspotentiale die digitale Fotografie dem künstlerisch arbeitenden Fotografen bietet.
