Cartoons by E.T. Reed
The "Prehistoric Peeps" Cartoons show us a hilarious world. Drawn in the 19th century by E.T. Reed, the cartoons enjoyed immense popularity. Edward Tennyson Reed was born in Greenwich, London in 1860, the son of Sir Edward Reed, Chief Naval Architect and MP for Cardiff. Accompanying his father to the House of Commons, hours spent in the Strangers' Gallery honed his skills for political caricature. In 1883 he took up drawing and in 1890 he was appointed to the staff of Punch, where he created the series 'Contrasts' and 'Transformations'. Later, in 1893, he would introduce the series which he became famous for, the 'Prehistoric Peeps' series. He re-introduced the grotesque into Punch cartoons and achieved remarkable facial likeness however bizarre the overall effect. Reed usually worked in pen and ink but preferred pencil with careful hatching and shading. In 1894, he finally took up the position of parliamentary caricaturist. Though he retired from the post in 1912, he continued to contribute to Punch until his death on 12 July 1933.
